Sarah Ward - Primary trainee

Year of study

2018/19

Tell us about your route into teaching...

I worked in children’s services for 16 years before spending six years evaluating children’s mental health services in the North East.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I have two boys and they amaze me every day with what they know and what they can do. I have worked with children and their families for as long as I can remember and I know how rewarding it can be. I have played with the idea of teaching for a very long time but opportunities kept taking me in different directions. After I was made redundant earlier this year, I decided that it was definitely time to go for it!

Why did you choose Shotton Hall SCITT?

I knew on the day of my interview that I would choose Shotton Hall SCITT if I was offered a place. I loved the facilities and the hands on nature of the course. The staff were so welcoming and warm to all of us, it was very relaxed. The support offered at Shotton Hall SCITT is second to none. Once I was offered my place I needed to complete a science GCSE which I found challenging, but primary lead, Ros, offered me so much support and even arranged tuition to get me through the exam - 16 years after my first attempt!

What would you say to anyone else thinking of becoming a teacher?

There is no right or wrong time to do it, if it’s something that you’re passionate about and committed to then go for it!

What has been your favourite part of training so far?

I have enjoyed being straight in the classroom from the very start of the course. The first couple of weeks are a huge learning curve but being around children in schools motivates you to stick at it.
