Clara Newman - Primary with maths trainee

Year of study

2020/21

What were you doing before SCITT?

I worked in higher education outreach at a university in the North East, working to widen participation in higher education with primary and secondary schools and colleges.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I enjoyed working in classrooms the most when working in higher education outreach. I was able to support children and young people to have confidence in their abilities, achieve their best and enjoy learning. Teaching is the only career where I can work in the classroom and have this impact each and every day. I have also met a lot of dedicated, outstanding teachers who have inspired me to teach.

Why did you choose Shotton Hall SCITT?

I attended an open evening taster event with Shotton Hall SCITT and was really impressed with how passionate and knowledgeable the teacher training team were. The programme stood out for me as trainees receive a mixture of teaching placements, mini-placements and practical and evidence-based teacher training. Shotton Hall SCITT gave me confidence that I could train to be an outstanding teacher, and all children deserve an outstanding education. Also, trainees study for a PGCE with Durham University which provides access to brilliant resources and further levels of support - the PGCE is really helpful for a career in teaching.

What would you say to anyone thinking of teaching?

Teaching is diverse, exciting and really rewarding! If you are thinking of getting into teaching, just go for it. Trainees come from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

What has been your favourite part of training so far?

My favourite part of training so far has been my first teaching placement, where I could put my training into practice.

How does teaching differ from your previous career?

Teaching is very similar to working in higher education outreach but as a primary school teacher I am able to work with the same group of children for a long time and it is really rewarding to see how they progress. I also have to be a lot more creative and plan my own lessons.

Do you have any tips or advice for potential trainees?

My best advice is to speak to teachers, trainees and the Shotton Hall SCITT team to see if teaching is for you - ask lots of questions!
