Chloe Marshall - Design and technology trainee

Year of study

2020/21

What were you doing before SCITT?

I was working part time in a shop to earn some money. After completing my intense degree in 2019, I wanted some time to travel and have more life experiences.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I always loved the idea of helping guide young people to make positive decisions for their future. I feel like design-based subjects and careers still have a negative stigma attached to them but after experiencing the industry at university, I found there are so many amazing opportunities out there, not to be overlooked. After the lockdown changed my plans for the year, I decided to take the leap and start my teacher training earlier than planned.

Why did you choose Shotton Hall SCITT?

I had two friends who did the course last year and they loved it! I also felt that the hands-on training was much better for me personally as academic writing isn’t my strong point.

What would you say to anyone thinking of teaching?

I would highly recommend the Shotton Hall SCITT programme! I feel that the hands-on school experience is invaluable in the education sector.

What has been your favourite part of training so far?

Being able to apply the theory to the classroom. Having placements during the current climate is extremely beneficial, being able to adapt and learn in a constantly changing environment will prove to be very useful in the long term for our confidence and ability to adapt.

How does teaching differ from your previous career?

It is a very big change. My degree is in fashion design and my previous employment history is all retail, so taking the jump into teaching has been a big change. Having not done design and technology since Key Stage 3, it is a big learning curve for myself.

Do you have any tips or advice for potential trainees?

If you are teaching a subject like design and technology, with many different sub-topics, try and recap and fill any knowledge gaps before the course begins. Also, just roll with the punches! Things are constantly changing and everyone is learning, don’t be afraid to make mistakes!
