Amy Wright - English trainee

Year of study

2020/21

What were you doing before SCITT?

I was a recent graduate – I had studied a journalism at university and then I completed a masters in fashion marketing.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I once read that to be a teacher means to be a student always. It is a career in which you are constantly learning and developing. No two days are the same and I really love that!

Why did you choose Shotton Hall SCITT?

After attending a taster day, I was impressed by the facilities and support available. All of the Shotton Hall SCITT staff are passionate about teaching and this really shines through in the training they provide.

What would you say to anyone thinking of teaching?

Good time management is key as training involves balancing academic assignments with school placements, lesson planning and developing your subject knowledge. Get a diary - I would be lost without mine as it allows me to plan my time effectively and keep track of important dates.

What has been your favourite part of training so far?

The face-to-face sessions with the SCITT team, which we were lucky enough to have before lockdown, were really engaging and motivating.

How does teaching differ from your previous career?

Teacher training is intense but I’ve never felt better supported. The Shotton Hall SCITT team in particular are excellent at keeping you inspired and encouraging you to be the best teacher you can be.

Do you have any tips or advice for potential trainees?

If you want a good head start, I’d recommend researching the basics of safeguarding and some key pedagogical theory as both of these areas are the backbone of teacher training.
