An English teacher should be enthusiastic and easily convey a love of their subject, a love of literature. They should be ready to question, to ask why. They should be curious and look to instil that curiosity in their pupils. An English teacher inspires, they encourage a pupil to believe in themselves
Subject knowledge needed to teach English
English teachers have a good general knowledge of English literature, and they possess strong English language skills. Subject knowledge can be developed prior to starting the course through access to our Subject Knowledge Enhancement materials. English applicants will be provided with a reading list which informs them of some key texts to read. The BBC Bitesize website is a good starting point to develop any areas of weakness also. We would recommend viewing the English National Curriculum as this will give you an overview of which topics are covered in schools.

Why teaching English is important
English gives a pupil the opportunity to explore all aspects of life through stories, studying characters and themes as well as authorial intent. By doing this, a pupil finds out about themselves. English encourages a pupil to explore worlds through studying a text as all life is there. English develops a pupil’s ability to communicate effectively in the world and acts as a door into an understanding of other subjects. By studying English, pupils become more tolerant.

Support
We provide ongoing, bespoke, subject specific SCITT Tutor support throughout your entire programme. Our SEDD (Subject Enhancement and Delivery Days) programme enable trainees to work with various heads of department and outstanding teachers in their subject areas. You will also work with expert English teachers during your two teaching placements.

Secondary teacher training courses
(11-16 with KS2 enhancement and post-16 enhancement):
To attain qualified teacher status, trainees will be assessed against the Teachers’ Standards in the age phases of their course. They must teach and demonstrate that they achieve the Teachers’ Standards in the specific and consecutive age ranges.
